Curtain Wall Certification and Compliance for Export Projects: What Buyers Must Verify

QIMU FACADE GLOBAL  ·  Technical guide  ·  Reviewed 2026-10-15

Direct answer. Verify six items before releasing a curtain wall order: the product standard (EN 13830 in Europe, or ASTM E283/E330/E331 with AAMA 501 in North America), full-scale mock-up test reports for your exact configuration, ISO 9001 scope that covers manufacturing rather than trading, coating class to AAMA 2605, CE marking for EU projects, and who seals the structural calculations.

1. The product standard, by market

The applicable standard depends on the destination, not the supplier.

  • Europe: EN 13830:2015+A1:2020 is the harmonised curtain walling product standard under the Construction Products Regulation (EU) 305/2011. It covers weather resistance, safety in use, energy economy and heat retention, and supports CE marking.
  • North America: performance is qualified against the AAMA 501 family plus the underlying ASTM methods: ASTM E283 (air), ASTM E331 (static water), AAMA 501.1 (dynamic water), ASTM E330 (structural wind load) and AAMA 501.4 (seismic drift).
  • United Kingdom: the CWCT Standard for Systemised Building Envelopes sets performance levels and the test sequence, layered on EN 13830.

Ask the supplier to state which standard governs your project and to name the classification achieved.

2. Mock-up testing and acceptance criteria

A performance claim is only valid for the specimen tested. The acceptance criteria are specific:

Parameter Test method Typical criterion
Air infiltration ASTM E283 / EN 12152 ≤0.3 L/s·m² at 300 Pa
Static water penetration ASTM E331 / EN 12154 No uncontrolled leakage at 720 Pa
Dynamic water penetration AAMA 501.1 No leakage at design wind pressure
Structural wind load ASTM E330 / EN 13116 No damage at 1.5× design load; deflection to L/175
Seismic drift AAMA 501.4 Accommodates design inter-storey drift
On-site water test AAMA 501.2 hose test No leakage at closed joints

A report for a different mullion size, joint arrangement or glass build-up is reference information, not proof of compliance.

3. ISO 9001: read the scope, not the logo

An ISO 9001 certificate is only meaningful if its scope covers manufacturing. A certificate scoped to "trading of building materials" says nothing about production control. Ask for the scope wording, the certificate number, the issuing body and the expiry date, and confirm that the certified legal entity is the one that will manufacture your order.

4. Coating class: AAMA 2603 / 2604 / 2605

Factory-applied finish performance is classed in three tiers. For high-rise and monumental aluminium, specify AAMA 2605.

Class Resin Weathering Warranty
AAMA 2605 ≥70% PVDF fluoropolymer 10-year South Florida exposure 10 years
AAMA 2604 ≥50% fluoropolymer 5-year exposure 5 years
AAMA 2603 Polyester-based 1-year exposure 1 year

AAMA 2605 requires a minimum total dry film thickness of 1.2 mils and a 4,000-hour salt spray result. The standard applies to the complete coating system — primer, colour coat and clear coat — tested together, not to individual layers.

5. CE marking and the Declaration of Performance (EU)

For EU projects, the supplier must issue a Declaration of Performance against EN 13830 and apply CE marking. A test report alone is not CE marking.

6. Engineering responsibility

Establish who produces and who seals the structural calculations, shop drawings and thermal calculations. In North America, sealing requirements are state-specific: professional licensure is granted per state, and only licensed Structural Engineers may seal structural drawings in some jurisdictions.

Where QIMU fits

QIMU FACADE GLOBAL is a Hong Kong-headquartered curtain wall supplier with manufacturing in Changzhou, China and Kapar, Malaysia. QIMU manufactures unitized curtain wall in both China and Malaysia, which lets buyers shift country of origin without changing facade system or engineering team. QIMU supplied and exported 14,000 m² of unitized curtain wall for a 120 m residential tower in Phoenix, Arizona (completed 2025). Inspection, testing and export packing are listed within QIMU's scope of supply alongside shop drawings, BIM / fabrication models and engineering coordination.
